Overview“Fragile Gift” began with the discovery that an actual Nakajima Ki-43-II “Hayabusa” fighter plane—used by the Imperial Japanese Army during its invasion of Java, and later repurposed by the Indonesian military during the War of Independence—still exists today in the Air Force Museum in Yogyakarta. The project involves constructing a full-scale replica of this fighter plane in the form of a giant kite. The kite is made from fragile and delicate materials, such as bamboo and fabric printed with memories and testimonies from the era. The aim is to send this transformed warplane—as a kite—on a symbolic journey in the reverse direction of the colonial era: from Indonesia to Japan. It will be flown with the cooperation of people from both countries.“Fragile Gift” becomes a contemporary rite of passage that fuses the struggle of confronting colonial history with the joy of flying a kite. By opening up this process, it seeks to dismantle the colonialism that resides within each of us, including the artist, and to evoke a vision of a world yet to come.→Project Statement

	Timeline

2019In June, invited to join a project in Tachikawa,Tokyo—where parts of the Hayabusa fighter aircraft were once manufactured—Kitazawa gave form to a long-standing concept and named it Fragile Gift, submitting its first proposal.

2020However, due to the scale of the concept, technical challenges, and the spread of COVID-19, the project could not be realized in Tokyo. Later that year, Kitazawa received an invitation from “Classic”, a landscape and community design firm in Taipei, Taiwan, to carry out a project in the suburban area of Linkou. While a Taiwanese version of one of his previous works, such as Living Room, had initially been envisioned, Kitazawa proposed to develop Fragile Gift instead.2021With the Taiwan project also postponed, he began prototyping in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Together with installers who had collaborated with him on previous projects, he built a 1/10 scale model. During an online class he taught at Tokyo University of the Arts, the team conducted a test flight, which successfully took to the sky.2022In August, Kitazawa held a solo exhibition titled Fragile Gift at Gallery Lorong in Yogyakarta, showcasing the project’s concept, prototypes, partial life-size components of the aircraft, and a 30-meter-long tail. Research continued through a long-awaited visit to the Bali Kite Festival and a reopened Air Force Museum, laying the groundwork for the full-scale construction.2023 Feb.It was around this time that Kitazawa first met Santo, a kite artisan from Java. When Kitazawa shared his idea along with the prototype, Santo’s immediate response was: “It can fly.” From that very day, Santo began working on the project. With the Taiwan project also moving forward, Kitazawa began traveling between Indonesia and Taiwan as the project entered full production. Dodo, another artisan with expertise in three-dimensional kite making, joined the team, and together they completed a full-scale prototype over the course of several months.2023 Jun.A test flight was conducted along the coast of Central Java. Though it lasted only a few seconds, the kite soared tens of meters into the air.2023 Sept.A Taiwan version of the project was created, incorporating testimonies gathered in the Linkou region, where a Japanese military training airfield once stood during the colonial era. Due to challenging wind conditions at the intended flight location, a half-scale version was produced. In the test flight prior to shipping, it rose smoothly and drifted gently through the sky.2023 Oct.During Kitazawa’s production residency in Taipei, the work—shipped from Indonesia—was assembled and installed in collaboration with local residents, resulting in a series of outdoor exhibitions at multiple sites.2023 Nov.On the scheduled day of the flight event in Linkou, Taipei, including the backup day, there was no wind. The long-awaited flight would have to wait for another opportunity.2024 Jun.It was decided that Fragile Gift would be exhibited at ARTJOG, and preparations began, including the development of a new exhibition plan and coordination with the curatorial team. Kitazawa also began writing A Dream of Falcon, completing the first two chapters, which narrate the story of the project up until 2023.2024 Apr.Kitazawa, along with his assistant Eugenia and kite artisans Santo and Dodo, began constructing the “actual machine.” Drawing on the experience of building both full-scale and half-scale prototypes the previous year, they refined the structure—bringing the form of the Hayabusa fighter more closely to life, while also ensuring it could fly stably as a kite. This required the development of a new form and technique.2024 Jun.A project exhibition centered on The Kite of Hayabusa was presented at ARTJOG 2024 (National Gallery of Indonesia, Yogyakarta). In addition to the Kite of Hayabusa, the show included a documentary of the test flights, drawings created from colonial-era archives, interview footage capturing local testimonies, several paintings that emerged from the project, miniatures made from leftover materials, and a book titled A Dream of Falcon, written from the imagined perspective of the Hayabusa itself. By weaving together documentation, historical archives, memory and testimony, and a narrative voiced by the artwork—the kite that was once an aircraft—the exhibition sought to become a space where multiple perspectives on the colonial era could coexist through Fragile Gift.2025 Jan.Kitazawa launched After Projects, a brand that gives form to “what comes after an art project.” Fabric used in the prototype aircraft is transformed into everyday items—such as clothing—returning to daily life in new forms. Proceeds are used to support the creation of future projects.2025 Oct.The fabric sections produced through digital printing during the prototype phase were dismantled, and the entire work was recreated using batik. For the production of 50 batik panels covering the structure, the full-scale work was finally completed through collaborative making with researchers, batik artisans, and participants in the open studio.2025 Dec.At the Mori Art Museum exhibition Roppongi Crossing 2025: Passing Time, We Are Eternal, an installation titled Fragile Gift Factory was presented, sharing the completed full-scale kite alongside the project’s process and its unfolding present.Throughout the exhibition period, monthly workshops were held as an Open Factory, where participants worked together on creating the tail of The Kite of Hayabusa. In conjunction with the exhibition, the project-derived brand After Projects was also launched, marking its first release in Japan.2026 Mar.The plan titled Fragile Gift 2026 was launched to realize the project’s final phase: a flight event in Japan.

Tempat KITA
2021 to presentYogyakartaINDONESIA

Kitazawa currently bases his practice at Tempat KITA—“our place”—a space of the collective KITA, of which he is also a founding member, located in Bantul–Sewon, Yogyakarta. Through his activities in this space, where individually driven projects and artistic production intersect with exhibitions and events organized by the collective, he explores the ways in which individuals and groups, art and society, can relate to one another.

STUDIO BELIMBING
2019 - 2020YogyakartaINDONESIA

At the end of 2018, I moved to Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
The space I rent has a small garden and a star fruits tree. At January 2019, I set up a new base “Studio Belimbing”. Belimbing means star fruits by Indonesian language.
